Chad, officially the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It borders Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west. The country covers about 1,284,000 km², making it one of the largest countries in Africa. Chad has a population of around 18 million people (2025), with inhabitants spread across diverse ecological zones ranging from the Sahara Desert in the north to savannas in the south. The capital city, N'Djamena, is located in the southwest near the border with Cameroon and serves as the country's main political, economic, and cultural center.
