Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country in West Africa. It borders Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south, and almost completely surrounds The Gambia. To the west, it has a long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The country covers about 196,700 km², making it relatively small compared to many of its regional neighbors. Senegal has a population of around 18 million people (2025), with most inhabitants concentrated in coastal areas and major urban centers. The capital city, Dakar, lies on the Cape Verde Peninsula on the Atlantic coast and serves as a major political, economic, and cultural hub in West Africa.
